2009 saw one of the world’s largest media complexes being brought to reality in Salford Quays, Manchester, UK. by Peel Media a division of The Peel Group. Known as Media City it is a complex of seven (7) state of the art TV Studios ranging in size from 92m” to 1170m” and designed to accommodate the widest style & variety of productions possible The first permanent resident in the completed new studio complex is to be the British Broadcasting Corporation ( BBC - North)
Subsequent to an initial period of consultancy in early 2009 LSI (Studio) Projects was awarded by Peel Media a contract to design, supply and install the Studio Lighting, Suspension and Electrical Distribution systems in all seven (7) media city studios.
With a target finishing date of December 2010 LSI’s design team/programme commenced in the first months of 2009, with our installation teams then on-site in November 2009 as the studios became ready for fit-out. During the peak fit-out period of the contract LSI (Studio) Projects had a site based contracting & support team of 50+ staff working through-out Media City. Of the seven studios the final three (3) were completed and handed over on time to the client on the 3rd December 2010.
EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED & INSTALLED
The complex has been equipped throughout with ETC’s Control Consoles, with the ETC ‘Congo’ desk being installed in the 4 largest studios and their ‘Element’ desk in the remaining 3 smaller studios
Throughout the studio complex ETC sine wave ‘Matrix’ dimmers have been installed providing in total 2,346 x 3kW and 164 x 5kW dimmers all fed via dual electrical supplies with a full generator back-up.
A complete ACN lighting network was provided as were separate DMX
networks in each studio to provide maximum flexibility, reduce turn-round times and to ensure the systems are as future proof as possible.
The 4 large studios are equipped with DeSisti’s exclusive and operationally proven steel band 80kg SWL self climbing hoists, and DeSisti 180kg SWL scenery hoists. All hoists are controlled via DeSisti ‘Icarus’ touch screen control systems. The 3 smaller studios are equipped with conventional track & barrel grids with DeSisti steel band pole operated pantographs.
A set objective when considering the luminaire requirements/package for all seven (7) studios was to ensure the chosen fixtures were as energy efficient as possible. The rational behind this approach was to effectively reduce the normal tungsten loads with the use of DeSisti’s Deluxe Cool Fluorescent fixtures for all soft lighting, and DeSisti’s Multipower units which are capable of accepting 1, 1.2, 2, 2.5 and 3kW rated lamps. The use of the Multipower units ensuring that the correct wattage lamp is used as required to maintain colour temperature, thus avoiding the need to dim down higher wattage lamps. Additional energy savings were gained with the use of DeSisti’s new 500w & 1kW Cyclorama top lights and groundrows which replace the traditional 625w & 1250w units
